Videos aim to address the lack of understanding and trust among general public about
digital ID, to highlight exactly how it will work and how it will benefit them.
UK, Tuesday 6th February 2024 - The Open Identity Exchange, a non-profit organisation, has launched a series of short educational videos to help the general public understand what digital ID is all about and why it will be a positive development for them.
Digital ID is a major focus around the world, including the UK. In a handful of countries, digital ID is now the primary way people can access both public and private sector services.
Some of the key benefits include instant access to services they are entitled to, without having to remember forgettable passwords or find and provide physical ID documents to prove who they are. People will be able to keep up to date on, and share, changes in their data more easily.
As countries moves towards this model, a key challenge for governments and other stakeholders, is overcoming the severe lack of understanding and trust among the public who will need to use it to access the services and products they are entitled to.
Some of the questions being asked include:
- What is Digital ID?
- How will it impact me?
- Is it secure?
- How can I be sure my privacy will still be protected?
- Will I be at greater risk identity fraud?
- Can anyone get a digital ID?
- What if I do not want a digital ID?
According to the OIX, it is vital that those people who will benefit the most from digital ID, understand what it is and how it will work.
Nick Mothershaw, Chief Identity Strategist at OIX, said: “Before any of us can access the products and services that we want, we have to prove who we are and that we are entitled to them. Digital ID is changing how we do this, and it will be better.
“The rate at which digital ID is progressing means it can’t be ignored, but it is a confusing subject. There is a lot of misunderstanding and a lack of trust. Our own work as a not-for-profit organisation is about making sure digital ID is fair, secure, respects privacy and meets the needs of each person involved. We want to help people understand how they will benefit and give them answers that they can understand.
“Our educational videos answer all the key and common questions that people have about digital ID, as well as clear up myths. They also highlight the important rules and guidelines that must be in place to make sure digital is done right.”
