Before any of us can access the products and services that we want, we have to prove who we are and that we are entitled to those products and services. Digital ID is changing how we do this for the better.
But too many of the people who will be able to use digital ID to access the services they are entitled to, still do not know what digital ID is or how it will work. It is a confusing subject, but the rate at which digital ID is progressing around the world means it can’t be ignored.
To help, the OIX has launched a series of short educational videos aimed at the general public to help them understand how they will benefit. The videos will give them answers in a way that they can understand, as well as clear up some of the myths that exist around digital ID.
The first in the series of videos introduces what digital ID is and can be found HERE
The benefits of digital ID are significant, including instant access to the services people are entitled to. In fact, there are already a few countries, for example Denmark, where digital ID is now the primary way people access both public and private sector services.
However, access is one of the key concerns that many people have, particularly those who already struggle to produce the physical ID documents needed to prove who they are. Understandably, they are worried about being able to get a digital ID, and whether this will make it harder for them to access the services and products they need. Others simply do not want a digital ID and are worried that it will be mandatory. This video will help clarify key concerns around access.
Many people are also concerned about how secure digital ID is and whether it will make them more vulnerable to identity fraud. Last year in the UK alone, consumers lost £1.2 billion to fraud, so it’s no surprise that it is a concern for people when it comes to using digital ID. The good news is that digital ID has some key features that make it safer and help reduce levels of fraud overall. It will do away with forgettable passwords, for example. This video will help clarify why digital ID is safe and the rules being put in place to ensure will digital ID is secure.
Some people also have questions around data privacy and are concerned about whether their privacy will still be protected with a digital ID. Others are worried that they will lose control of how their digital ID is used and that the biometrics within a digital ID might be used to monitor everything they do.
The good news is that with digital ID, people will continue to be in complete control of who their details are shared with and how their identity data is used. They will also be able to share changes in their details with multiple service providers more easily. This video will help explain how privacy will continue to be protected and the rules being put in place to ensure this remains the case.
