OIX has played a key role in the progress being made to achieve digital ID trust around the world and we will be talking about this in our forthcoming workshop, The DNA of Digital ID, at Identiverse 2024.
We discovered a ‘DNA of digital ID’ through our analysis of digital ID approaches across the US, Canada, EU, UK, Singapore, Thailand, Sweden and MOSIP. We are now using this insight to create tools that allow trust frameworks, wallets, issuers and relying parties to express and compare their policy criteria to facilitate cross framework interoperability.
We have also been exploring in depth how ‘digital ID trust frameworks’ need to evolve into ‘digital ID and credential trust frameworks’ to support the rules required for trusted digital wallets. The questions we will be answering include:
- What new roles and rules are needed?
- How are frameworks such as the EU and UK addressing these new rules and roles?
- How are rules to ensure consistent issue of credentials and use case specific presentations going to fit into these evolved trust frameworks?
A key element of this is the need for ‘roaming wallets.’ Users don’t want a new wallet for each trust framework they encounter as they roam around the globe. They want the wallets and credentials they already have to simply work, so how can we make this happen? Will wallets need to be added to local trust list through a static assessment? Or will they dynamically adapt to new trust framework rules they encounter? We will be answering these questions.
Another key area that we will be shedding some light on is levels of assurance. Our view is that definitions of levels of assurance are likely to be harmonised across frameworks, but it should be possible to derive a local level of assurance from credentials that the user already likely holds in their trusted wallet. Our view is that local specialist 'ID proofing providers' will play a key role here.
The concepts developed by OIX to progress digital ID trust are evolutionary and we are keen to share them, as well as encourage views and concerns to be shared with us.
In another workshop at Identiverse 2024 alongside Daon, we will be revealing the highlights of recent research exploring what real-world buying organisations think of digital ID: Are Buyers Ready for Digital ID? Or Are They Confused?
Through a facilitated qualitative-research temperature check of opinion across relying parties from diverse sectors (including employment, healthcare, finance, payments, home rental, retail and gambling), we sought to understand some of the challenges and how they might be addressed.
We found that relying parties:
- need relevancy and clear value, in a clear statement of benefits to win over the priorities of other stakeholders
- want to solve problems, not focus on technology components as digital ID is
- get confused and disengaged by jargon
- are aware of their social responsibilities and see digital ID as a way that these may be addressed
- see too much divergent thinking in the market at the moment which causes confusion and uncertainty
- want to know that their regulatory or industry body approves the use of digital ID.
